Understanding how you function—so you can change it
ALEXANDER STEWART
Founded Respiratory Fitness in 2009 in New York City. Now also based in Oslo, Norway, working internationally.
Before this work: world-class athlete, professional actor, performance and behavior consultant. Forty years in performance.
In 2010, a life-threatening accident. Six operations, months on morphine, four years of severe pain, nearly seven years not walking. My own physiology … which had always been at peak levels … was broken. My breathing was dysfunctional. End-tidal CO2 had dropped from 40 mmHg to under 30 mmHg. Symptoms I didn’t recognize as mine started appearing.
That’s where the work began. Despite a lifetime of performance, I realized I didn’t actually understand breathing’s effect on health, function, or performance. I went looking.
In 2007 I learned the breathing sciences and acquired my first CapnoTrainer instrument. In 2013 I founded Respiratory Fitness Institute in Oslo. In 2016 I earned a Master of Science in Applied Breathing Science.
The work draws on three fields: respiratory physiology, behavioral science, and the deeper work of how people actually function underneath. The aim is the same regardless of what brings someone in: identify what’s limiting them, and change it.
It is designed to identify what is limiting you—and change it.
